What is a trimester?
People often refer to pregnancy as lasting nine months. In fact, it is usually a little longer than that. Your pregnancy is measured from the first day of your last period rather than from the day you conceived. Pregnancy usually lasts around 40 weeks, and your dates are given in weeks rather than months because this is more accurate.
Your pregnancy consists of three stages called trimesters, and each trimester lasts approximately three months. Each trimester has its own ups and downs, and you can learn what to expect in this pregnancy calendar. The information in the Pregnancy Week by Week Calendar may also be useful for those close to you.

Pregnancy Week by Week 1-2-3 Trimester

Pregnancy Week by Week 1st Trimester
1. Trimester (First 3 Months)
Pregnancy Week by Week: The first trimester begins on the first day of your last period and lasts until the end of the 12th week. This means that by the time you find out you are pregnant, you are probably five or six weeks along!
A lot happens during these first three months. The fertilized egg rapidly divides into cell layers and implants itself into the wall of your uterus, where it continues to grow. These cell layers develop into an embryo, and at this stage, the baby is referred to as an embryo.
During this trimester, your baby grows faster than at any other time. By six weeks, a heartbeat is usually detectable, and by the end of the 12th week, your baby’s bones, muscles, and all the organs of its body have formed. At this point, your baby looks like a tiny human and is now referred to as a fetus. It will even practice swallowing! (Pregnancy Week by Week)

Pregnancy Week by Week 2nd Trimester
2nd Trimester (Second 3-Month Period)
Pregnancy Week by Week: During this period, your baby can hear certain sounds. By the 20th week, the digestive system begins to function.
Your baby’s skin will wrinkle and be covered with a waxy substance called lanugo and fine hairs. They will sleep and wake regularly and may start kicking and stretching. Their sucking reflexes are developing, and they may even suck their thumbs.
If you wish, you can usually find out your baby’s gender during your 20-week screening. This scan is offered when you are between 18 and 20 weeks pregnant. If your baby is born prematurely after 24 weeks, there is a chance of survival, but if born this early, they will require intensive care for an extended period. The longer they remain in the womb, the greater their chances of survival. (Pregnancy Week by Week)

Pregnancy Week by Week 3rd Trimester
3rd Trimester (Third 3-Month Period)
Pregnancy Week by Week; The third trimester of your pregnancy covers the period from week 29 to week 42. During this stage of pregnancy, your emotions tend to shift from fatigue and anxiety to excitement about the baby.
Your baby continues to grow, and as the third trimester progresses, they will have a better chance if they are born prematurely. You will have more check-ups with your midwife during the third trimester because it is important to monitor your and your baby’s health.
Your baby’s position becomes even more important now, and you may start thinking about what will happen during childbirth. An important thing to remember during the third trimester is that you should now sleep on your side at night (and during daytime naps). (Pregnancy Week by Week)
